Getting your baby to the dentist early on in life not only helps you stay on top of possible cavities but also decreases any fears you or your child have about going to the dentist. For this first visit, you want to choose someone who is gentle and caring as Dr. Sonia. And earlier the child starts, the more comfortable and safer your child will feel at the dentist. Your child’s first visit is recommended to be at age 1.
What can I expect at my baby’s first dental visit?
The exam is done on your lap. You will be sitting facing the dentist, and the baby will be sitting facing you. We gently lay down you baby on the pillow on the doctor’s lap. The exam itself is short and includes a look at the teeth, bite, gums, lip tie, and tongue tie. The dentist will examine for cavities and any potential problems in your child’s mouth. We can do cleaning and fluoride treatment in this position as well.
Most of the time is spent talking to you about good oral care for you baby. Topics include:
- Proper brushing and flossing techniques for infants and toddlers
- Diet for healthy teeth
- Infant oral habits such as thumb sucking and pacifiers
- Fluoride needs
- Teeth development
During the discussion, please be sure to ask any questions you may have about your baby’s oral health.
